Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter Reviews
***** Katdyn for life!, November 21, 2009
Amazing filter. Solid construction, takes a beating and just keeps pumping. It’s a tool so it does take some care and feeding on occasion but I expect I’ll be using this filter for 20 years… it’s just that solid.

***** Katadyn Pocket is the last filter you will ever buy, October 19, 2009
I previously owned a Katadyn Hiker Pro Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter and a Katadyn VarioKatadyn Vario Multi Flow Water Microfilter. Both had small plastic parts break in the middle of extended wilderness trips. For the Hiker, the input barb broke off and for the Vario the pump axis broke. I cannot say that I am hard on my equipment but tools that are made for the outdoors should withstand the occasional bump. Fortunately, the vendor took both items back for a full refund.
I decided to invest a bit more in a filter that I would not have to worry about and sprang for the Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter. I am not disappointed with my purchase. I only had a chance to use it once so far, but I can tell that it performs beautifully. All parts that could possibly break are either stainless steel. It is about three times as expensive as the Vario, but from the fact sheet you should get 25 times the filter capacity (2,000 liters for Vario vs. 50,000 liters for the Pocket). It should pay for itself!
Last but not least: I really liked the ergonomics of the Vario, especially with a plastic bottle attached to the bottom. I find the Pocket even better, works like an old fashioned bicycle pump.
Conclusion: this will be the last filter I will have to buy.

My first cheaper, lighter, pump filter cracked on the second day of a week of backpacking on Isle Royale Natl. Park – which has cysts among other biologicals in the water. It was the first time I ever used it after testing it with tap water at home. More pressurized, UNfiltered water sprayed out the crack than into my canteen. Filling a canteen took forever, but it could have been much worse if it didn’t filter at all. Carrying fuel for boiling was out of the question. Buy this Katadyn and never worry about your drinking water again. How much is NOT having intestinal distress worth when you are on vacation and far from medical care or meds? The Red Cross has used them to filter water in Africa for sixty years with no failures. Save your pack weight somewhere else, the extra pound that this filter weighs is well worth the assurance of safe water it affords. Filter your water from the top of the source to avoid the bottom sediment and it will last for generations. This filter is so reliable that you don’t need to carry a backup unless you are absent minded and likely to leave it by the stream after filling your canteen. I have the decades old, white model, but it still works like new.

I’ve tried (and broken) numerous different water filters. I consider myself very gentle with my equipment but lately I’ve broken my fair share of “plastic” filters. I won’t “name names” but these were name brand filters… I finally abandoned my quest for the uber-light and got a Pocket Filter. I could not be happier with my decision. The Pocket worked great, every time. My husband and I just finished a month-long trek in the high Sierra’s and never worried once about whether our water filter was going to work or not. While on the trail, we spoke with numerous other hikers who broke their “plastic” filters too and were resorting to purification pills as a back-up. We told them to get a Pocket. The Pocket was easy to use, easier to maintain and solid as a rock. Do not let the weight of this filter dissuade you – you will be glad to have this filter when it really counts.

***** When it comes to purified water, reliability is critical, March 31, 2009
The price is daunting, but its to hard overvalue reliable water purification. We backpack the desert southwest, so the penalty for failure is too great when it comes to water. This filter system is stout, robust and will take a beating and work the next day. I prefer the ceramic filter approach and have never had any problems. Avoid the cheap parts and suboptimal workmanship of other systems. I learned my lesson. I had the plastic version by another company, and after about 100 liters of pumping the O-ring blew. Lucky it was purifying the last liter before starting the day-long hump out. Back in civilization I find out they want $20 for a 5 cent part. I think not. Fool me once…
After that I realized that quality, in this case, is the driving force. That’s when I bought the Katadyn. Great investment.

This is the most amazing water filter on the market. If you are looking for a cheap piece of junk with a plastic handle that might break, buy any of the others on the market. This is used around the world. I have used it in the US and abroad. My friend convinced me since he had used it on a mission trip in the Philippines. I talked to a guy who, while in Utah, could not find anything better than a mud puddle to drink from. He pulled out his Pocket Katadyn and it worked great. Other filters have a relatively short life span. Think about this. The Pocket has possibly a 13,000 gallon life on one filter. If you were to use this filter to pump only one gallon a day, you would need to buy a new filter element 35 years later. That’s assuming your not normally drinking from a mud puddle. Even when the filter gets hard to pump and dirty, all you have to do is open it up and clean it out and it will pump smoothly again. If you consider the life span of this pump it may be the cheapest filter on the market. But if you are one of those people that like to buy cheap things that break and have to be replaced buy one of the cheap filters out there.
True this one is a little heavier, but it is worth having a filter that will work and has a metal handle so you won’t have to worry about breaking it. Although if you do drop it on a rock it is possible to break the filter element. So caution is still needed.
I added the Carbon charcoal extension that enables you to drink from virtually any source. The extension was only around 10 to $12.

There are trade offs among weight, size, and cost with the water filters I have used. This one is more expensive, smaller, and packs easier, but is a little heavier for its size due to the nature and quality of the materials utilized. Others are lower priced and made of lighter plastic materials, but occupy more space. I have used this on three and four day hikes. It performs as one would expect. Prepare to do a good deal of pumping to produce your water. I gave it four stars only because it would be nicer if the design incorporated hoses with a greater diameter to allow more water to be filtered with each pump.
